Quantum Computers - What they can and cannot do
Quantum Computers will never replace conventional computers for a simple reason: they have a hard time giving exact answers!
"Mr Smith, your account balance is $50,000 with a 95% probability" - is not what you want to hear from your bank.
But there's a problem class where they will shine. More than shine.
Problem Class: Checking an extremely large number of entities to find one that meets certain criteria.
It's very easy to bring a conventional computer to its knees with this simple problem class.
For example, a set with a mere 500 members has 2^500 subsets - way more than the estimated number of protons in the universe. So to check each one is totally beyond conventional computers. And always will be.
But a Quantum Computer could handle this problem, and that opens a whole new world of possibilities.
